11th Annual Forum of the EUSBSR

PA-Bioeconomy stood behind two workshops on the Annual Forum 2020 (which was a digital event).
• Unlocking the nutrient recycling potential in the Baltic Sea Region, 30 September 2020. The workshop was organized by the PA-Bioeconomy flagship project “SuMaNu” in cooperation with the project BSR WATER. Both projects are “Platform projects” with funding from Interreg Baltic.
• The Sustainable Bioeconomy: Trends and Value Chain Opportunities, 7 October 2020.
The workshop was held in cooperation with PA-Innovation and featured two new publications on the development of the Bioeconomy in the BSR.

The first module of the Baltic Leadership Program Bioeconomy – Youth was arranged the 21-23:rd of November in Stockholm. A group of 30 participants representing all the EU member states in the Baltic Sea Region gathered during three days to start exploring the possibilities for the bioeconomy in the region.

Fifth meeting of the Baltic Sea Region Bioeconomy Council

Global Bioeconomy Summit

The workshop, structured in three main sessions (“Sustainable Fisheries”, “Marine Aquaculture”; and “Disruptive trends in the blue bioeconomy”) will feature the present status on sustainable blue bioeconomy, marine aquaculture and future trends emphasizing scientific and technological achievements and socio-economic issues involving international cooperation. Workshop participants will have an overview of the international scene and on future developments in the respective sectors. The event could be a discussion base to set up a bioeconomy network on these fields.

Fourth meeting of the Baltic Sea Region Bioeconomy Council

The fourth meeting of the Baltic Sea Region Bioeconomy Council will be held in Copenhagen on 12 October. The main theme will be the challenges and opportunities facing EUBSR PA Bioeconomy. These will be presented by speakers from Chalmers University, the German Bio-Economy Secretariat and the Nordic Council of Ministers. Five proposals will then be pitched to the meeting as principles for the sustainable bio-economy of Sustainia. The meeting will conclude with a discussion of the challenges involved in engaging civil society in pursuing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and some potential solutions to those challenges.

The BSR Stars S3 is hosting a two-day studytrip on bioeconomy and circular economy in the Baltic Sea Region, in collaboration with the Nordic Council of Ministers, Nordregio and the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth.

The objective of the event is to 1) share insights and lessons learned from Industrial Symbiosis development efforts in Kalundborg, Helsingborg and beyond in the Baltic Sea Region and 2) to explore the opportunities for further accelerating such sustainable development efforts through cooperation between partners from national and regional authorities, knowledge institutions and business in the Baltic Sea Region.

Third meeting of the Baltic Sea Region Bioeconomy Council

The 3rd meeting in the BSR Bioeconomy Council is held in Riga 8. March 2017. The main theme of the meeting is how to develop sustainability criteria for the Baltic bioeconomy. The meeting is in two parts – in the first half we hear the views of people from the Nordic Council of Ministers, FAO, CBSS and more but after lunch the Danish think tank Sustainia facilitates a real workshop and dialog about how we can elaborate on the UN Sustainable Development Goals to contribute to a more sustainable bioeconomy in the Baltic Sea Region.

Stockholm - The 7th Strategy Forum of the EUSBSR

The 7th Strategy Forum of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR) will be hosted by Sweden together with the Nordic Council of Ministers and in close cooperation with the European Commission. The Strategy Forum will be held on 8-9 November 2016 at the Brewery Conference Centre in Stockholm, Sweden.
The overall theme of the 7th Strategy Forum is the future of the Baltic Sea Region and how to achieve a common vision for 2030. The Strategy Forum will be used to discuss how the EUSBSR can or should contribute to a desired development within its three objectives: Save the Sea, Connect the Region and Increase Prosperity. The slogan for the Strategy Forum is: One Region, One Future - Vision for the Baltic Sea Region 2030". The event is hosted by Sweden together with the Nordic Council of Ministers and in close cooperation with the European Commission.

2'nd Baltic Sea Region Bioeconomy Council meeting

The BSR Bioeconomy Council met for the second time on 21 June 2016 in Copenhagen. At the meeting Henning Klarlund from Roskilde University presented the report “Impact Study” to the Council addressing the issue of performance and impact indicators for assessing the progress of the bioeconomy development efforts in the Baltic Sea Region (see report under resources), and Iceland (by Matis) and Finland (by Digipolis) presented their respective initiatives aiming to bring together efforts of public and private stakeholders at the local, regional and national level – and beyond, internationally.

Meeting of bio-clusters

On 18-19 May 2016 the Nordic Council of Ministers will call upon a number of bioeconomy clusters in the Baltic Sea Region (such as bio-clusters, life-science clusters, food clusters, forestry clusters, symbiosis clusters and clench clusters) for two days of experience sharing on how to actually and practically facilitate and fertilize growth in the bioeconomy at the local and regional level. More specifically business development peers will have an opportunity to discuss lessons learned as regards cluster development mobilisation; implementation of collaborative efforts; and pathways to ensure sustainability of efforts. Also, the regional and local bio-cluster proponents will have opportunity to discuss what could be the opportunities for connecting clusters to facilitate bioeconomy business-to-business cooperation and trade in the Baltic Sea Region. For this purpose the event will provide also a platform for companies to engage with regional authorities on how their bioeconomy business solutions may contribute to accelerate regional growth.

The Baltic Sea Region Bioeconomy Council

The Baltic Sea Region Bioeconomy Council is a result of the cooperation efforts that since 2013 have aimed at developing a sustainable circular bioeconomy in the Baltic Sea Region. These efforts take place within the context of the European Union Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR), within which the NCM coordinates the cooperation on bioeconomy. The Baltic Sea Region Bioeconomy Council is composed of leaders in development and implementation of enabling bioeconomy strategies, policies and initiatives in the Baltic Sea Region. The Council has members from local, regional, national, macro-regional and international governmental organisations, knowledge institutions and non-governmental organisations.

The first meeting of the Council will be organised on 1 March 2016 (10:00-15:00) at the Nordic Council of Ministers Secretariat in Copenhagen.
